Sensor Meter Data Cleaning with R @FZAG
Company Profile
The Flughafen Zürich AG (FZAG) is a mixed-economy and a publicly listed company. It operates one of Switzerland's most significant transportation and meeting hubs, namely the Zürich Airport, as well as eight airports abroad. FZAG employs around 1,700 staff at the Zurich location only. FZAG focuses on three main business areas: transportation hubs, commercial centers, and real estate.
Problem Statement
The FZAG has over several 1000 meters that count electricity, water, heating and cold usage across their extensive real estate portfolio. These meters have been maintained manually for over 10 years by multiple end-users as free input text. This has led to inconsistencies in terms of naming conventions, which as a result gives us a huge list with redundant entries that refer to the same metering units with slightly different names. As part of their new migration from their custom legacy system into SAP Industry Solution – Utilities (IS-U)these must be standardized into a consistent and cohesive list.
Solution
We developed an R script that analyses and cleans the meters data. The script generates a comprehensive and clean list of all unique meters. These unique meters are then categorized and grouped so that it gives an overview of how many meters of each type have been installed and are still in usage. Furthermore, the script generates an HTML report that provides the full documentation of the cleaning process.
Added Value
A clean and comprehensive HTML report which provides a list of all the sensor meters installed across the real estate portfolio of the FZAG. This allows them to migrate their meter data into the IS-U module in a smooth and effective way, without the manual effort that would be to fix each meter individually.
